Fix cannot empty the trash in Mac OS X

Have you come across a situation when you cannot empty the trash Mac and encountered an error message like any of the following?

"The operation cannot be completed because the file is locked"

"The operation cannot be completed because the item is in use"

If yes, then simply following a few steps ou can get rid of the problem and start using your Mac as before. It is a well known fact that in Mac OS X, every user account has an invisible Trash folder in the home folder. To delete a file one needs to either drag the item's icon to Trash in the Dock or select the item and press the Command-Delete button. Now choose Empty Trash from Finder menu.   • >>  Hold the Option key
  • >>  Choose Empty Trash from Finder File menu.

If the file is locked then follow the steps mentioned below to unlock it:


  • >>  Open the Terminal (/Applications/Utilities).
  • >>  Write “sudo chflags -R nouchg ”
  • >>  Drag the file or folder that you want to unlock in the Terminal window.
  • >>  Click Return.
  • >>  Enter the password and click on Return.

After you have unlocked the file, delete the file by pressing the Shift-Option or the Option key combinationwhen emptying Trash.

The steps mentioned above would surely resolve the issue of cannot empty the trash in Mac OS X and let you delete the files from the trash.
